The Problem
People are tired of dating apps focused solely on the looks connecting them on a very shallow level. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of single-person households without children increased by 20 % in the EU. The number of dating apps users grew by 50 million since 2017 reaching the dizzying figure of 270 million. The need for deep human connection times is bigger than ever.
Project Goal
To create an experience that allows users to find deep and meaningful connections by finding similarities between them and cherishing their individuality.
Primary Research
In order to understand people's needs in the area of dating, I conducted 4 semi-structured interviews which covered their dating habits and information consumption behaviors. I also conducted an in-person observation with 3 participants, which focuses on how users navigate through the GeekLove app and what their reactions are toward certain elements and content on the website.
Key findings
#1
Many singles are open to dating someone who is different from them, but certain characteristics would give some people pause. Its often are more clear on what they don't want in the partner than exact features they are looking for.
#2
Users want to have the possibility to quickly use the data they already posted on other social platforms.
#3
Singles want an easy way to connect by using the shared interests and hobbies.
Problem: Users want an easy way to connect with possible partner; they want person that not only shares similar values but more importantly person that don't have certain characteristics.
Primary User Persona
I created the persona based on the characteristics of the primary user group - singles, which explains the major goals and frustrations of the user group, and their priorities of app functions.
Competitive Analysis Findings
#1
Offer customization options that emphasize similar interests to stand out from competitors.
#2
Create a straightforward process for integrating the app with other social platforms.
#3
Integrate app with voice assistive technology.
Wireframes
One of the user journeys was designed with wireframes.
I user tested the wireframes using a combination of internal critiques for initial feedback and immediate feedback on smaller functions. The low fidelity prototype included a ticket-buying option and was created in order to conduct usability studies with participants. I find that making too low-fidelity prototypes that are too simple will not draw the best feedback from users, but on the other end, mockups overly polished doesn’t offer room for sharing ideas and encourage to solely look for flaws. Later on, I moved to high-fidelity design in order to test app accessibility.
